The 80th Annual Academy Awards

February 27, 2008
By Serah Schuster (Hair Consultant) and Roger Dawkins

"Check this out." That's what Cameron Diaz probably said to herself when she was doing her obligatory rear end pose on the red-carpet at the Oscars this year. But, as captivating as Cameron's rear end is, there were other eye catching things at the 80th Annual Academy Awards. There were girls in flowing gowns, guys in suave suits, and of course, there were hairstyles galore. All in all, the ladies looked flawless: from top to bottom. As for the gentlemen, well, some didn't quite make it to the barber's for that preparatory cut and shave.

We've picked out some hairstyles we loved from the event, as well as a few we didn't think were so hot. Remember, you can get more detail on the stars' hairdos, as well as a taste of what you can do with your own photo at TheHairStyler.com, with our Hairstyling Tool below. Imagine wearing the same hairstyle Katherine Heigl wore to the Oscars, or the award winning Marion Cotillard's sexy hairdo. Upload your photo, try on some hairstyles, and feel like a star.

Daniel Day-Lewis
With her sassy hairdo draped over one shoulder, Marion Cotillard looked like a winner even before the Oscars started. Her full-bodied style was layered through the mid lengths and ends to create volume and movement. This was a seductive look for the French actress, and we'll see much more of her in the future.

Tilda Swinton's hair was certainly eye catching. Cut short through the back and layered up to the sides and top, I bet it required no effort at all. Combined with this striking color, Tilda's style is a great choice for those with fine to medium hair. Doesn't she make it seem easy: just slip on a dress, run your fingers through your hair, arrive at the Oscars and win one for the top shelf? Well done Tilda!

The "best" in his Best Actor Oscar might not refer to everything about Daniel Day-Lewis (best hair, best earrings, best style), but all eyes were still trained on him as he made his way to the stage to collect his award. Daniel's shaggy hair was only trimmed to fall over his ears and show off his layers through the sides and back-all creating a definite sense of movement and bounce.

Diablo Cody
The winner of the Best Actor in a Supporting Role had a grin from ear to ear no one could wipe off (rightfully so, I think). He arrived in a suave suit with a tamed hairdo swept over to one side for a classy finish. Maybe he was out to prove that he's not as stylistically challenged as the character he played in No Country for Old Men. He left with an Oscar to complete his look, and who could really ask for more?

It's not easy to feel glamorous when you're seven months pregnant, but Cate certainly looked glamorous.Even though her hairstyle was casual (with half of it pulled away from her face and the rest left to tickle her shoulders), and even though-on anyone else-we might ask for a bit more effort, we've let her off the hook. She's got more important things to worry about, and at the end of the day, she looked great!

This award winning writer was all smiles, and who could blame her? With tattoos on her shoulder and an interesting history of exotic dancing, Diablo proves that Hollywood isn't as conservative as it sometimes seems. Her hair was glossed and glammed-up into a sharp bob with jagged-cut bangs that looked stunning. But I'm not sure about that dress (is it just me, or does it look a bit Flintstones?).

Heidi Klum

Colin Farrell
Ellen's adorable: the star of a great film (Juno), she's gorgeous, and she's got such a solid future in the movies. But, she needs to sack her stylist. We've seen her at a few occasions now where her hair is always the same: loose curls framing the face; half up, half down. It looks great, but when you're moving in the circles she is, a bit of a styling makeover every so often is absolutely necessary.

Heidi Klum walked the red-carpet like she owned it, and that's fair enough because she was more captivating than anyone. Her elegant red dress and hair pulled up in a simple-yet sensational-bun guaranteed she turned heads. It's too bad the Academy doesn't give out awards for Best Dressed.

There's a good chance many people thought the same as I when Colin walked the red-carpet: "Does he know he's going to the Oscars?" A trim? A shave? "Forget it" (was probably what he was thinking). He went for a shaggy hairdo, with ends textured all over and uniform cut for balance. This wouldn't have taken Colin any time at all to style, so I guess it's an easy maintenance hairdo to say the least.

Brad Bird
Katherine Heigl looked like she was channelling the best of the 1940s with her sexy hairstyle. The length is trimmed to sit above her shoulders with layers cut through the sides and back to create bounce and body in her mid lengths and ends. Katherine looked flawless on the night, with no one else coming close to looking so intriguing.

She walked the red-carpet with such grace and dignity that everyone couldn't help turning Kelly's way. With her flowing gown and sensational smile, her wavy hairdo completed her style beautifully. Her hair wasn't drowned in hairspray or overflowing with bobby pins: it was just perfect.

Brad was clearly thinking "casual" when grooming for tonight's event. But that's not to say he didn't look great. The winner of the Animated Feature Film Oscar had a style that was cropped short at the back and sides and blended into the top, which was also layered to give his look a rough finish. Brad's hairdo is a great choice for guys like himself who are thinning, but don't want the buzz cut look.

Penélope Cruz

Renée Zellweger
This was a sexy upstyle for Nancy (who always looks great). Her hairstyle was slicked back and pulled to one side to achieve an asymmetrical shape that complimented her face wonderfully. Her sassy smile and stunning hairdo were perfect for this occasion-so perfect, in fact, maybe she should have given her stylist's number to some others who didn't look quite so glamorous.

Penélope Cruz had half her lustrous locks pinned up through the front and top, with the back left to hang down low for a sexy finish. The top was teased and pulled away from her face to add height to her style, and this suited her petite face beautifully. But just because it suited her, doesn't mean it was perfect. Perhaps a little more effort would have made her look more "Oscars" (and less like she was just going to dinner with close friends).

Renée Zellweger should've won an Oscar just for looking gorgeous. Her hairstyle certainly complimented her over all look. The back is cut short to the nape of her neck, with soft, sliced layers through the sides and back to create movement and elegance. There's no doubt her bangs were an important part of this look as they softened her face and added a nice flirty touch to her image.

Suzie Templeton

Tamika Ray

Cameron Diaz
Suzie Templeton looked amazing not only in her red hot dress, but also with her sassy hairdo-both of which had all the cameras clicking. Her loose waves draped her shoulders beautifully, and her layers (through the front) shaped her face perfectly. This is an elegant hairstyle that suited the event and really worked well to soften her facial features.

Tamika Ray's hair had VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME; she dazzled the paparazzi and the red-carpet crowd. Her length and layers were cut a uniform length all over to achieve a balanced look. Her hair was anything but smooth and silky, yet definitely stunning. This style suited her face, giving her height, and looks best on those who have naturally tight curly hair.

She's certainly gorgeous, but you'd be forgiven for thinking Cameron couldn't get over her days starring in Charlie's Angels. Why? It's those flared bangs she's wearing (again). This pulled-back hairdo with side-parted bangs left out to frame her face looks great if you're going to the beach, but I think the Academy Awards calls for a bit more effort. At least her dress was eye catching.

The 2008 Grammy Awards At TheHairStyler.com, we're into hair-I suppose you could say we're hair addicts. And what better place to check out great hair than this year's Grammy Awards ceremony, a night celebrating the past, present and up-and-coming of the music industry. There were old stars, new stars, stars-back-from-the-dead, and political stars (who would have thought Barack Obama would be a Grammy winner?). The controversy's great; I mean, Amy Winehouse cleaned up (winning five Grammys), but was denied a visa to enter the US to claim her awards! There are so many crazy things going on at the Grammys, and we take a peek at styles chosen by some stars on their special night of nights. I like to wonder, "What kind of style would I step out with on the red-carpet?" Check out our photos, have a read of our styling tips, and do what I do: think about your own style too. Remember, you can get more detail on the stars' hairdos (as well as a taste of what you can do with your own photo at TheHairStyler.com) with our Hairstyling Tool below.

Ayra Veronica

Carrie Underwood
She's a double Grammy winner who's also a star off the musical stage for her divine hairstyles. Tonight her hair looked slick and smooth. It was layered slightly through the back and sides as well as the front. The front gave shape to her gorgeous neckline, and brilliant bangs completed her style.

There's only way to describe Ayra: smoldering. Her hair-dark and mysterious-framed her shoulders with long layers through the sides and back. The front layers added shape to her style without distracting from her perfect look. This style would really suit those with a rounder face shape.

This blonde bombshell won a Grammy Award for her musical talents, but what about another award for this bold hairstyle? Her layers (cut through the back and sides) created body and volume, and her sexy bangs added an elegant touch over all. This gorgeous style is perfect for those with long face shapes.

David Grohl

Fantasia Barrino
Forget the 80s: Cyndi showed the world her style and taste are totally now. With loose curls, the back pinned up (to achieve maximum height and body), and the sides left to tickle her shoulders, Cyndi attracted well deserved attention left, right and center.

David undoubtedly looks cool, calm and collected. His glossy mane was layered through the ends to soften the overall look. The front layers, starting from his jaw line, created a sexy shape perfectly complementing his neckline.
Fantasia stunned guests at the 2008 Grammys. She was oozing attitude: her head was dramatically shaved at the back and on the left side. And to complete the outrageous style, the top and right side of her head were left longer and layered to create a sensational asymmetrical shape.

Juliana Depandi
Fergie didn't snaffle a Grammy, but there was no stopping her bewitching the crowd with this chic look. Her hair flowed deliciously below her shoulders with medium to long layers cut into the back and sides. This stunning style is perfect for those with round or fuller faces.

This Spanish heart-throb looked hot with a no fuss hairstyle. The back and sides were cut short and the top textured for definition. This style means easy maintenance, needing only a little wax or molding gum.

Juliana had the cameras going wild at the 2008 Grammys! Why? A drop-dead gorgeous hairstyle that worked well because it framed her shoulders perfectly. Layers through the sides and back, starting from mid-length and tapering down, gave her hair a lovely shape and great body and bounce.

Leona Lewis
Wearing her hair out to show off her stunning length was a seductive look for Kim. Her ends and layers were sliced to achieve a soft finish all over. Her top layers added height to her style-and this is perfect for her face shape. This hairstyle works well on fine to medium hair types.

This renowned pianist let out his wild side with his funked-up look and sassy spikes. His ends were razor-cut all over to achieve a wispy feathered finish. This style works well on Lang Lang because of his naturally straight hair. A little product is all that's needed to complete this look.
Leona's tousled tresses attracted as much attention as her good looks. Layers cut through the back and sides added body and bounce to her style, complementing her face shape too (the layers balanced out her narrow jaw line). This style works well on naturally medium to thick hair.

Miley Cyrus

Raquel Welch

Rihanna
Miley was tousled and dazzling on the red-carpet. The silky length of her hair was set off by shorter layers cut from under the crown and blended down to the tips. This style enhanced the wave-like movement of her total look.

Raquel still has a sixth sense for fashion and she proved it on this night with her hairstyle. Sliced layers through the back and sides of her hair added flair and softness to her style. Her sexy bangs created a frame for her face, flawlessly completing her look. This wispy hairdo is perfect for those with longer faces as the flicked out layers create balance.

She's won two Grammys, and has a great new hairstyle that guests and fans love. What more could you want? The back and sides of her new hairdo were cropped short, but the top layers were textured for height and control. A perfect style for round faces, try it yourself with a little wax or molding gum.

Tia Carrere

Whitney Houston
This stunning blonde looked great with her blonde locks. Her ends were sliced to lighten the length, and layers were added to the mid-lengths to balance out her waves and curls. Her side-swept bangs finished off her style and complimented her face shape perfectly.

Tia looked divine. As she made her way up the red-carpet she turned heads with her sassy style. The length in her hair has been complimented by layers cut into the back and sides-an effect that also creates movement right to the edges of her hair. This style is best suited to those with round face shapes.

This divine diva chose to wear her hair up. The back was teased and pinned up, and loose fragments were left out to blend in with her sassy side-swept bangs. The top of her style was teased to add height, demonstrating among other things the versatility of this style.
