SLOT MACHINE MYTHS

All slot myths are based around the idea that you can tell when a machine is going to payout. The fact however is you cannot and slots are a game of chance. To understand why this is so, you need to understand the programming of a slot machine, which is based around a random number generator.

How A RNG Works

The numbers produced by the Random Number Generator in a slot machine are not truly random because they are the result of a mathematical process. If you knew the formula used and the value of the last random number generated, you would be able to calculate the next random number that would be generated; you can't however do this! The random number generator is actually a series of codes written into the software of the game chip, it is an electronic program that generates numbers and it does it quickly and at least 100 numbers every second can be generated. In a slot machine, each one of those numbers corresponds to a result on the reels. The effect of this, for the player, is a random choice from a field of numbers that will determine the outcome of the play.

Why You Can't BEAT The RNG

The basic effect of a slot's RNG is a random generation of a number from the field of numbers in the program, at least every one-hundredth of a second. The RNG is always generating numbers-whether the machine is being played or is sitting idle. The chip is generating numbers at a rate of no less than 100 per second. When you press the spin button, deal button etc the computer's processor retrieves the number that is generated at that instant. Even if the programmer of the slot, who knows the sequence in which the numbers are being generated, sits down, by the time he calculates what the next number may be, the machine will have run away from him as at least 100 numbers are generated every second . In addition, codes can be changed regularly as an additional safeguard. While it is not totally random, by the nature of its programming from a player's point of view it is and it is impossible to crack the program.

Misconceptions About The RNG

The fact that people don't really understand how the RNG works has led to these common misconceptions:

Someone hit a jackpot on the machine you just left; you would have gotten that jackpot if you kept playing

The RNG is continuously cycling through numbers even when the machine is not being played. These numbers correspond to the stops on the wheel that display the winning or losing symbols that are seen when the reels stop. When you hit the spin button, the RNG picks the combination at that given microsecond. If you had stayed at the machine, it is highly unlikely that you would have stopped the RNG at the exact microsecond to display that exact same combination of numbers. To achieve the same results consider this: You both would have had to hit the spin button at the exact same millisecond (that's 1/1000 of a second) to have achieved the same result and the chances of this happening are highly unlikely.

You can tell the odds of winning by counting the symbols on each wheel

The RNG generates a number for each spin. The number corresponds to the symbols on the Reel. There can be hundreds of Virtual stops on each wheel even though you only see a few symbols. For example you may see 20 symbols on each wheel of a three-reel machine. You figure 20 x 20 x 20 = 8,000 combinations and your chance of hitting the jackpot is 1 in 8000. In reality the computer chip may program 256 stops for each wheel which makes the odds 256 x 256 x 256 =16,777,216 combinations. Being able to generate millions of combinations is the reason that slots can offer such large payouts as the odds of hitting the large payout are small

Casinos change the odds of machines

The slot machines have a computer chip in them that determines the pay back percentage. These are preset. In order for a casino to change the pay back, they would have to change the chip. With regulation and the fact that the chip is preset with odds of payout means that this is not really an option a legitimate casino would even consider

A machine that has not been paying is due to hit

Although the laws of probability dictate that the longer a machine is played the closer it gets to paying off a jackpot, it is equally likely that a jackpot could hit at any time including the next spin There is no way to determine if a machine is due to hit. Each spin is a random occurrence and has no bearing on what has happened previously.

Avoid these myths and play with the strategies outlined on this website and maybe you could be one of the lucky players to win one of the major jackpots.
