Conservation
No other aspect of Environmental Issues is perhaps as urgent and
crucial as conservation. It means conservation of the natural
resources the earth provides for our needs. This is our water,
our air, minerals, metals, biomaterials, and the animals with
which we co-exist.
Until the period known as the Industrial Revolution, we basically
consumed only what we needed to survive, and were more of less
in harmony with nature. The consumer society has changed all that.
We now use and consume massive amounts of electricity produced
by mostly wasteful and dangerous methods; we invent, produce and
buy all manners of products that are superfluous to our existence,
but now designed for our comfort.
The result is the wastage of our natural resources on economies
of scale. Without measures the earth will cease to provide these
necessities. The measures are known as conservation. They are
well known, but need universal acceptance and agreement for their
implementation.
This will bring about renewable energy sources; meaningful recycling
of materials used in manufacturing and construction, clean air
and water, and a return to man's harmonious existence with his
environment.
